We are thrilled to announce that Moctar Fall of JPMorgan has agreed to become a new EMpower Underwriter. Moctar recently attended the Grants Committee meeting hosted by The Rohatyn Group and was so impressed by our grantees work and the participatory process that he has agreed to join this critically important group!
The Underwriting Group's commitment allows 100% of other individual donations to go straight to our grantee partners. Our goal is to attract a few additional Underwriters in the near term so that we can start the New Year in a robust position to concentrate on our program work.
We welcome Moctar to the group as we continue to forge ahead with the development of EMpower for the benefit of the next generation in EM countries.
EMpower Grantee Partners Widely Recognized
EMpower supports organizations that are distinguished for their forward thinking and innovative projects working to improve the lives of youth in their communities. Throughout the years, EMpower has worked closely with organizations to help them develop their capacity and we are always proud when others heap praise on them. We’d like to congratulate three organizations on their recent accolades:
Fundación Pro Alvear in Argentina was recently recognized as one of the top three “Best Educators” in the annual prize of the prestigious newspaper Diario La Nación. Fundación Pro-Alvear offers an array of extracurricular activities, such as computer training,
sports and school enrichment programs. EMpower and Pro-Alvear formed a partnership in June 2007 to help them double their capacity to provide computer literacy and training. The grant will also provide disadvantaged youth in the community of Intendente Alvear, in La Pampa, Argentina with alternatives to unproductive or dangerous past times and to enable them to connect to a broader world through the internet. Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, founder and executive director of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL), was recently awarded the Gleitsman International Activist Award. The award is given to individuals whose selfless efforts have improved the quality of life in their countries. AIL was established in 1995,
in the face of the Taliban regime, to provide education for girls and boys as well as health education for women and children. EMpower’s last grant to AIL was awarded in November 2007 for general operating support. A total of 350,000 women and children annually benefit from AIL’s programs. 200 young children will receive pre-school instruction, 1100 teachers and school administrators will receive teaching and management training, impacting 33,000 of their students. 150 students at Gawhar Shad University will receive instruction in nursing/health education, mathematics, computer science and teacher training. 7,500 women, children and youth will obtain preventive health knowledge.
Eliana Elias of Minga Peru was recently invited to present her work with indigenous women of the Peruvian Amazon to the UNIFEM Global Campaign “Say No to Violence”. At the United Nations she gave a speech to the delegates as well as spoke via internet chat to journalists all over the world. She was also featured on CNN en Español as part of an exposition on the new economic
opportunities of women, where she spoke particularly of the work EMpower is supporting. EMpower’s long-standing support has aided Minga Peru in the expansion of major outreach programs – such as their award winning radio program, peer education networks, and training in artisan crafts – as well as helped the organization scale up operations.
EMpower wishes to congratulate these award recipients and encourage you to continue to support their excellence by
or by participating in tomorrow’s Charity Trading Day!
