What is EMpower?

EMpower - The Emerging Markets Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that ties the resources of Emerging Markets professionals world-wide with the vitality of community-based social sector initiatives in developing countries.

EMpower's mission is to provide disadvantaged young people in EM countries with the resources, skills, mentorship and opportunities to improve their lives and in turn help better their families, communities, and the world around them.

We believe that young people

  • are the key to progress and stability in EM countries
  • deserve the opportunity to achieve their greatest potential
  • given the right tools, will succeed in improving their lives and the lives of those around them, generation after generation

We also believe that cross sector partnerships are mutually beneficial for both the private and public sector and allow for an enriching exchange of perspectives and skills. To this end, EMpower strives to raise the level of awareness, involvement and investment of the EM community in philanthropy and specifically in strategies for development of healthier civil societies in the developing world.

Since its inception in 2000, EMpower has had a strong group of core supporters who have served as its Board and Underwriters.

What is an Emerging Market Country?

The term Emerging Market country commonly refers to industrializing or emerging regions of the world. Countries in these regions are considered to be in a transitional phase between developing and developed with an economy with low or middle per capita income. Emerging markets constitute about 80% of the world's population, representing about 20% of the world's economies.

What Makes EMpower Unique?

  • Concentration on emerging market countries - at a time when many other funders are leaving to work in less developed countries
  • Focus on young people and the four critical building blocks for their future -- education, health, economic opportunities and leadership
  • EMpower values donor input and engages them in decisions about grants and in dialogue with grantee partners about the issues they face and their solutions.
  • Streamlined, transparent, and highly cost-effective grant making model and we give 100% of funds raised from individuals to our grantee partners.
