Jabala Action Research Organisation
Extreme poverty and lack of livelihoods drive the large scale human trafficking phenomenon in India. Jabala Action Research Organization began promoting the rights of children of sex workers in a red light district of Kolkata in 1992, and has expanded its work to slums and outlying districts, addressing the root causes of trafficking, while also building the confidence, knowledge and skills of formerly trafficked youth.
EMpower’s fourth grant to Jabala provides vocational training in areas such as motor driving, catering and nursing, as well as functional literacy training, nutritional support and therapy for young female trafficking survivors. Vocational training is also provided to members of vulnerable families to increase household income as a trafficking prevention strategy.
