Navsarjan Trust / Dalit Shakti Kendra

Persistent caste-based discrimination in India continues to circumscribe the economic opportunities of Dalit (formerly ‘untouchable’ caste) youth. In 1989, Navsarjan Trust was founded to confront caste-based discrimination, and in 1999, they established the Dalit Empowerment Center to provide practical vocational and lifeskills to Dalit youth to empower and help them break into other occupations.

EMpower’s fourth grant to Navsarjan Trust continues to support vocational and lifeskills training for young people (predominantly female) from disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition to skills training, participants receive kits to practice their new craft and support to be to be successful in self-employment, and life.

EMpower’s current grant to Navsarjan helps them bring training opportunities to Dalit and other low-caste women and provide seed materials and equipment for graduate trainees of their program to launch their own income generating activities.
