Vacha Trust works with at risk youth, providing comprehensive programming including English language instruction, sexuality, gender and reproductive health education, citizenship and rights training, arts, culture and technology workshops, field trips and other activities. EMpower’s grant to Vacha Trust supports the organization to continue its Tejasvi Program, which provides supplementary educational and leadership opportunities to poor youth living in Mumbai’s slum areas. Through the grant, Vacha is continuing its courses in basic English and computer skills so youth are better equipped to deal with a globalizing society. In addition, workshops in arts, theatre, and awareness of children’s rights, outlets for creative and leadership (such as a youth-produced community newsletter, art exhibitions and street theatre), and visits to important historical, cultural and political sites provide youth with opportunities to grow, contribute, and appreciate the diversity of their culture and communities.
