On April 23rd 2017, long-time supporter and EMpowerUP athlete Alex Williamson, ran the London Marathon raising funds for EMpower!
On his fundraising page Alex states, “I used to run marathons. The year was 2010: I was childless, worked 10 hours a week less than now and as my wife cheerfully points out “Honey, you were a lot fitter then”. A serious marathon preparation routine involves 5 serious runs a week; I’m told 5 serious flights a week isn’t a traditionally accepted substitute.
So why on earth have I agreed to run 42.2km (a full marathon) in London on Sunday April 23rd? Misplaced bravado, stupidity & a degree of temporary insanity are clearly part of the answer, but more importantly: there is a good cause to run for”.

In April 2017, a group of 9 people aka Team Disco Bus, are taking part in the Rickshaw Run to raise money for EMpower and two other charities! This is an exciting 2-week, 3,000km Indian adventure which has no set route, no accommodation, and no help if they break down.
Team Disco Bus is made up of Richard Rouse, Rachel North, Clara Liddell, Robert Darling, Laura Westley, Edward Jackson, Sandro Hinds, Joe Martin and Freddie Moore. They will travel in 3 rickshaws which the organizers describe as “7 horsepower glorified lawnmowers”, from Jaisalmer in North India, to Cochin in the South.
The funds raised from this adventure will be split between EMpower, Cool Earth and Tusk Trust.
Good luck Team Disco Bus!

WHAT GIRLS CAN DO!
We’ve learned that there are no limits and no boundaries.
EMpower’s work with at-risk adolescent girls globally is long-standing. Through substantive partnerships with major foundations, girl-focused networks and collectives, and on-the-ground work with local organizations, EMpower has developed a strong knowledge base in: developing and designing girl-focused and girl-centered programs; measuring girl-focused program results; including boys in a broader vision of the role of gender.
Adolescent girls in particular often face gender barriers and discrimination with deep cultural roots. Of our more than 100 grantee partners, many strongly focus on enriching the lives of adolescent girls. Our partnerships have enabled thousands of young women to stay in school, avoid early marriage and explore nontraditional job pathways. With EMpower’s support, most of our grantee partners have adopted a “gender lens” in their approach and/or actively engage boys in their work to reduce gender bias and barriers.
On Friday, 14th October, Jan Willem Möller, Mano Markovits, Frank Bedaux and Joosje Hardus completed the Moontrekker Race! The Moontrekker Race is Hong Kong’s most exciting nighttime endurance competitions, offering 30km and 43km routes starting from Mui Wo, on Lantau Island, one of the toughest sections of all Hong Kong’s hikes.
Well done EMpower Team!
