EMpower is thrilled to be a part of Citi’s e for education campaign! The 6th annual campaign launched Tuesday, 4 September and will run until 2 November. EMpower is proud to have been chosen as one of the ten philanthropic organizations that will benefit from the campaign this year!
Citi’s Foreign Exchange and Local Markets business will donate $1 for every $1 million traded with Citi during the 9 weeks of the campaign via a broad range of electronic platforms including Citi’s proprietary platforms- Citi Velocity for institutional clients and CitiFX Pulse for corporate clients. For the first time this year, the campaign will include local market bonds, in addition to FX.
This incredible initiative has raised over $22.5 million since the campaign’s inception in 2013, supporting the education of over 250,000 youth globally. As a beneficiary of the campaign, e for education has enabled EMpower to deepen and expand our work in education, enabling at-risk youth in EM countries to receive a quality, relevant education. We have surpassed our original goal of $20,075! Thank you for rallying with EMpower to support families affected by recent destructive earthquakes in Lombok!
Donations are still welcome as the need for additional funds to rebuild is ongoing.
On August 5th, 2018, an incredibly strong 7.0 Richter scale earthquake struck East Bali, Indonesia, damaging hundreds of homes on the North Lombok coast. On August 9th, a second 6.2 Richter scale earthquake hit, damaging more homes in Ban Village where EMpower grantee partner East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) works. Hundreds of families are not able to go back to their homes due to damage or safety concerns, and are sleeping in fields or living under tarps.
73 homes in 10 of these communities have been destroyed beyond repair, with over 200 more sustaining damage. Donate today to continue to provide urgent assistance to these families - $275 builds one home!
The 19 communities in Ban Village where East Bali Poverty Project works are isolated high on the slopes of Mount Agung and Mount Abang, and were 200km from the earthquake epicenter. In September of last year, the explosions of Moung Agung had caused destruction and paused programs in these same communities. Families had been working hard to rebuild and the young people had been looking towards brighter futures, until this catastrophe hit.
EBPP aims to provide emergency safe shelters, but needs our support! $275 funds the construction of one shelter. Each temporary home will shelter one family (6-7 people), with priority to families whose homes were totally destroyed.
Each 3m x 5m home has concrete floors, a corrugated zinc roof and is constructed with bamboo provided by the communities, who will build them. EBPP will also provide basic necessities including mattresses, pillows, bed linen, floor mats, etc.
Thanks to your generosity, EBPP can now complete 73 homes.
Thank you for your support !
** Donations that exceeded the goal amount of $20,075 will be used as needed for additional emergency relief.

WHAT GIRLS CAN DO!
We’ve learned that there are no limits and no boundaries.
EMpower’s work with at-risk adolescent girls globally is long-standing. Through substantive partnerships with major foundations, girl-focused networks and collectives, and on-the-ground work with local organizations, EMpower has developed a strong knowledge base in: developing and designing girl-focused and girl-centered programs; measuring girl-focused program results; including boys in a broader vision of the role of gender.
Adolescent girls in particular often face gender barriers and discrimination with deep cultural roots. Of our more than 100 grantee partners, many strongly focus on enriching the lives of adolescent girls. Our partnerships have enabled thousands of young women to stay in school, avoid early marriage and explore nontraditional job pathways. With EMpower’s support, most of our grantee partners have adopted a “gender lens” in their approach and/or actively engage boys in their work to reduce gender bias and barriers.
EMpower supporters are highly creative and develop their own campaigns – with sports activities, theme-focused events, or making an EMpower donation a “gift” at their wedding. Rally your friends and colleagues to join you in your goal to help at-risk youth get the opportunities they deserve. We help get you started and support your efforts.Yes! I would like to start a campaign
