Successful Grants Meeting Approves $305,500 in Grants

A special thanks to Guido Mosca and The Rohatyn Group for hosting the most well attended grants meeting yet! In attendance along with 8 board members were EMpower supporters: Alec Alenstein, David Bessey, Kumaran Damodaram, Jeff Enslin, Moctar Fall, Luciana Galan, Diego Gradowczyk, Kathleen Kinsella, Federico Shaw, and Stuart Slatin Booth.

We approved 3 new grants and 5 renewal grants in Afghanistan, Argentina, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, and Vietnam. We are proud to announce a new grant partnership with Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) in Nigeria. In a country where women are traditionally excluded from public life and often suffer violence, KIND is working to end gender discrimination and to empower women to take on leadership positions. With EMpower's grant, KIND will create a cadre of young women leaders through training in reproductive health and rights, negotiation skills, financial management, entrepreneurship, and advocacy.

Another new grantee partner is Warma Tarinakuy located in Lima, Peru. Working in a poor area where adolescent boys often live on their own or work to support their families, Warma fosters leadership and mentorship among the boys, while providing a a safe haven, tutoring so they can continue their education, and nutritious meals. With EMpower's grant, Warma will stock a resource library to assist with schoolwork, conduct workshops on HIV and drug use prevention, and include protein in the daily meal.
