What is EMpower?
|EMpower -The Emerging Markets Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that connects the resources of Emerging Markets (EM) professionals worldwide with the vitality of local organizations in emerging market countries.
Founded in 2000 by financial professionals from the EM community who wanted to give back to the countries where they did business, EMpower makes grants and provides technical assistance through partnerships with local organizations working to improve conditions for young people in their communities. EMpower opened a London office in 2007, and a Hong Kong based office in 2011 and has active, strong Boards and Underwriters in both locations.
EMpower’s strategic focus on at-risk youth (ages 10-24) began in 2005.(see Why Youth?). We provide funding and other critical support to organizations in EM countries that are working to improve the lives of young people.
- Concentration on emerging market countries – at a time when many other funders are leaving to work in less developed countries.
- Focus on young people and the critical building blocks for their future — education, health and well-being and livelihoods.
- EMpower values donor input and engages donors in decisions about grants and in dialogue with grantee partners about the issues they face and their solutions.
- Streamlined, transparent, and highly cost-effective grantmaking model. We give 100% of funds raised from individuals to our grantee partners thanks to our Underwriters.
The term “EM country” commonly refers to industrializing nations of the world. Such countries are considered to be in a transitional phase between a developing and developed economy with middle (or lower) per capita income, and often marked by sharp economic inequalities. EM and developing countries constitute about 80% of the world’s population, and represent nearly 50%– and rapidly growing—share of the world’s economy.
