WorldBlu Honors Ikamva Youth
EMpower grantee partner Ikamva Youth was one of only 48 companies and organizations worldwide to be chosen for WorldBlu’s 2012 List of Most Democratic Workplaces. This annual list recognizes organizations that change the world for the better through democratic practice.
The first South African organization to receive this honor, Ikamva Youth equips learners from disadvantaged communities with the tools they need to access educational and/or employment opportunities. In South Africa where between 50-75% of young people drop out prior to matric (secondary-school-leaving exam), and less than 10% of black students go on to college or university, over 85% of Ikamva Youth learners pass the matric and over 70% have gained access to tertiary education. An additional 10% are employed or apprenticed within 2.5 months of matriculation.
Ikamva Youth stresses the importance of ‘giving back;’ over half those completing the program continue to volunteer to mentor and inspire younger learners.
EMpower congratulates Ikamva Youth on this honor and on its impressive achievements.
